This was a hard question but I think I can live without brushes… I mean I got fingers.

Where do you see your makeup career in the next 5 years?

I see myself traveling, learning more, meeting fellow makeup artists, inspiring girls that love makeup and just keep doing this.

Share a beauty tip/trick/hack.. whatever you’d like to call it. Lol

Don’t ever try your foundation on your face or neck or hand, always try it almost by your chest so it will not be to dark or to light.

Le 23rd Birthday

Hey, all 🙂 This post isn’t going to be about anything but me, me, and me. It’s more of a photo post than a writing post. The reason I’m sharing my 23rd birthday pictures is because this is MY blog so why noy give you a little glimpse into MY life. It’s a just a little break from reviews, how-to’s, trends, news, etc. It’s basically like when beauty gurus do vlogs instead of tutorials. Anyway, this birthday was the first one is 5 years that I’ve spent home aka NYC. From ages 18-22, I was either in Albany, Buffalo, or Miami. So, it was refreshing to spend this one with my family within arms reach.

Also, I wanted this birthday to be more low-key than my others. My last 4 birthdays consisted of clubbing and house parties. This birthday for me was a “coming of age” event, as I like to call it. Only because I didn’t want a crazy celebration. I had absolutely 0 interest getting turnt up. I actually would’ve been fine with wine and the spa hahaha. My preference actually would’ve been to travel, but that wasn’t in the cards this year. So, I opted for a dinner with my parents and my best friend. It was only right since I haven’t spent a birthday with my parents in years.

Anyway, here a few pictures of my night and just for fun, I’ll add a list of products I used for my birthday makeup just to add some beauty in here!

MUA Spotlight On: Joanna Alva

TGIF! It’s about that time again to meet another talented MUA. Let me introduce you guys to Joanna ♥. She was born and raised in Sunnyvale, California. By profession, she’s a Paralegal and a Notary Public. Her passion for makeup started at a young age, however, she hadn’t fully emerged until a year ago. When she graduated high school she considered going to cosmetology school, but the idea of doing hair and nails wasn’t appealing to her. What steered her towards makeup recently was that she craved creativity in a way that she was not able to express at work.  After doing a lot of research on different schools, she decided to take a certified makeup course with a local makeup artist. The reason why she didn’t want to take a mainstream beauty school course is because she felt it was more beneficial to learn from a makeup artist who was currently working in the field and who could give her real life experience. She’s learned a lot and has applied everything she’s learned to her freelance work.

Q&A

What is your favorite high-end brand?

I’m currently obsessed with anything and everything Anastasia Beverly Hills. There are a lot of amazing brands like Urban Decay, Kat Von D, Nars and Make Up For Ever, but my obsession at the moment is definitely ABH.

What are 3 makeup items you couldn’t possibly live without?

I’m going to have to go with 1) ABH brow powder, because I could probably double up and use it as a shadow, 2) ABH Liquid Lipstick in Dusty Rose, because the formula and color are simply to die for, and 3) the Sephora Collection High Precision Liquid Liner in Black. I feel like a bold lip, fierce liner and well-defined brows are all a girl really needs. Everything else is just fun and creativity.

What’s your favorite drugstore brand?

I can honestly say I’m a huge fan of E.L.F. Cosmetics. I feel like they’ve done such a good job of bringing affordable products to the public that get the job done. Yes, I can rave about Maybelline and L’Oreal. Their products are great, but to be completely honest, when I think “drugstore” I think affordability, and yes they’re affordable, but it’s not that big of a jump in comparison to say Sephora brands. E.L.F. is definitely the most affordable and I commend them for that.

What type of beauty product do you buy the most of (mascaras, concealers, lipsticks etc)?

I tend to gravitate towards buying lip products, i.e liquid lipsticks, lip pencils, glosses, etc. I love how a lipstick can totally change a look, from subtle and natural to bold and edgy.

What is the most common makeup faux pas that you see?

Brows!!! I’m not a fan of “mad brows”. LOL

Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely?

I definitely don’t have a beauty budget, but that doesn’t mean I don’t shop with the beauty budget mindset if that makes sense. I like to limit myself to shopping when I know I’m getting a good deal.

What’s your favorite lipstick?

As mentioned before, I’m in love with ABH Liquid Lipstick in Dusty Rose, but I am also liking Kat Von D’s Lolita.

Describe your everyday makeup look.

This is a hard one, I don’t really have an “everyday” make up look. I tend to coordinate my outfits with certain makeup looks. However, with that said, I do wear a lot of black and my “everyday” look would consist of a black winged liner with some Demi Wispies, light contour, blush/bronzer, highlight, and a colored lip.

What’s your favorite mascara?

Favorite mascara goes to Benefit They’re Real.

Is there any celebrity that you get your makeup inspiration from & why that celebrity?

Rachel Bilson, Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis – basically all women who have a cute sense of style and their makeup is more on the classic side.

Do you have some favorite beauty gurus? If so, who?

There are quite a few Youtube/make up gurus that just look flawless every time. Huda Kattan, Jaclyn Hill, Desi Perkins, LustreLux, Christen Dominique, DressYourFace, the list goes on. But, these ladies are my makeup inspirations for sure.

If you could leave the house with only ONE makeup product, which would it be?

Just one?!?!? Okay, I’m going to say a lipstick, because there are always sunglasses. 😉

Are there any brands that you try to avoid?

I’m pretty open to all brands, I think some are just amazing all around and everything you buy is great. Other times it’s a bit of trial and error until you find a product you like. I don’t like saying I dislike a certain brand unless I’ve tried everything they have to offer, which is pretty hard. I may say I don’t like certain products, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t something else they have that I don’t absolutely love.

Do you usually “haul” or buy items here & there?

I haul, and mostly at Sephora. There are so many things in that store, you go in looking specifically for one thing, you come out with your hands full.

What’s your favorite skincare brand?

I wouldn’t be able to give you specifics just yet. Skincare is something that I’ve just begun experimenting on. There are so many brands and they all have different purposes. However, I am currently using some Origins products that I like (ie. face wash, exfoliant, eye cream, and night cream).

What is one beauty tool/brush that you’d recommend to anyone?

The Beauty Blender without a doubt. I use it for foundation, concealer, setting powder. I think everyone can benefit from getting one.

What is one beauty product that you’d recommend to ANYONE & why?

do actually recommend falsies to everyone I meet. Although it is a bit tough to get the hang of putting them on, I think they are super flattering on everyone, and there are different styles to match different personalities.

If you had to give up one makeup item for the rest of your life, which would it be?

Mascara, I skip that step often when applying falsies, as long as I curl my lashes I’m good to go.

What is your absolute pet peeve when it comes to other people’s makeup?

I said brows already in the sense that some people overline their brows, create unnatural arches, or create their brows according to their mood, but another pet peeve of mine is brow grooming. I like well-kept brows. I’m also not a fan of shaved off brows.

Share a beauty tip/trick/hack.. whatever you’d like to call it. Lol

I think going with a bold wing can be difficult unless you’ve had a lot of practice, but, believe me, we all have our moments. I like to look directly in the mirror and slowly draw small lines, going back and forth between both eyes making sure the wings are symmetrical. Sometimes you can get too ahead of yourself and draw one really good wing, then the challenge is getting the angles to match. I haven’t tried the stencils yet, however, it seems like an awesome idea.

What’s the best way for future clients to reach you?

Future Clients can reach me by email at joanna@beautybyja.com or text at (408) 702-0964. Since I work during the week, it’s often a hit or miss if they call. But texts and emails I find are easy to get back to. With at least a weeks notice, I can make any day and time work.

All About That BRONZED GLOW

Although it may not feel like it, summer will be slowly coming to an end. The end of summer means less sun so less of that bronzed glow that you were rockin all summer long. Now, I know you may be thinking that I’m naturally bronzed, which in a way is true. That still doesn’t mean that the summer doesn’t give me a healthy glow. I, just like the rest of you, want to maintain that glow! So here are my favorite, affordable products to help you achieve and maintain that! Also, shout out to Desi Perkins for giving me the inspiration for this post. She stay doing bronzed makeup tutorials haha.

  • Avon Glow Bronzing Pearls ($9) – This is my absolute holy grail!!! I’ve been using it for years and it’s never failed me. I use it all year long to give me that warm glow all over my face.
  • Maybelline Master Hi-Light Face Studio Hi-lighting Bronzer ($10) – I fell in love with this last fall. It’s a highlighter and bronzer in one. However, it is pretty pigmented so I’d keep a light hand when using. Some people complain that it’s too shimmery but uh hello, it’s a HIGHLIGHTING bronzer.
  • Colourpop Highlighters in Butterfly Beach & Highly Waisted ($8 each) – These products are more for complimenting the bronze since they’re obviously highlighters. I pair these up with my Avon Bronzing pearls all the time and it looks FLAWLESS!
  • Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs ($10) – I got this complimentary for testing purposes from Influesnter months ago. However, I just used this to the beach on Sunday and it was amazing. I have some scaring on my legs from childhood injuries so I wanted to cover them up. Not to mention my legs were on the pale side since I hadn’t really bared them all out this summer. So I dabbed this all over my legs with a stippling brush and it was AMAZING. It even makes cellulite look less noticeable, but I’ve heard that’s what self tanners do. Then when I got into the sunlight, it was GLOW HEAVEN. There was a sparkle to my legs but nothing like you see in “Twilight”. It was just the perfect finish.
  • NYX Liquid Illuminator ($8) – Once again, this is a more complimentary product for the bronze but it’s still great. I used to have Gleam, which was perfect for my bronzed summer skin but now I have Sunbeam. Sunbeam is great for all skin tones, but especially light to medium. So, I definitely plan to use this when my skin gets a bit paler.

What are some of your favorite products to keep that bronzed glow?

MUA Spotlight On: Valery Clermont

Hey dolls! As you know, it’s been a super long time since I’ve had a makeup artist on the blog. It just wasn’t working out,  deadlines weren’t being met but fear no more – we’re back at it! Let me introduce you to this talented, 24 year old, Brooklyn native named Valery. Valery is currently a makeup artist at Sephora and has been doing makeup for 4 years. She started wearing makeup at young age due to the fact that she was a competitive dancer, so it was required. However, she was always fascinated with the fact that you can completely transform yourself with just the touch of a brush. So, she became really interested in makeup and different techniques. Throughout the years, she used her friends as test dummies until she felt completely confident to pursue it professionally.

One beauty product that I’d recommend to anyone is Sephora’s Always Red 01 lipstain. It’s a true red and looks great on everyone and super long wearing.

If you had to give up one makeup item for the rest of your life, which would it be?

If I had to give up one makeup item for the rest of my life it would have to be mascara because I love switching it up with different false lashes.

What is your absolute pet peeve when it comes to other people’s makeup?

My absolute pet peeve would have to be foundation that doesn’t match your neck. For a flawless, even look you want everything to match. So, if you decided to go a shade lighter or darker be sure to blend it down to your neck.

Share a beauty tip/trick/hack.. whatever you’d like to call it. Lol

An easy beauty trick is applying a small amount of your eyeshadow primer under your eyes before applying concealer. It increases the longevity of your concealer and prevents some creasing and settling into fine lines, but always remember to set your undereye with a translucent powder.

Colourpop Highlighters: Review & Swatches

Hey all! Today I want to do things a bit different. Let’s talk about highlighters! I never talk about highlighters because I never really fell into the whole trend. I would very rarely apply highlighters during my makeup routine… until now. When I first dabbled into highlighters, I bought NYX’s liquid illuminator because I wasn’t about to splurge on something I didn’t know how I was gonna feel about. So Becca’s highlighters, Bobbi Brown’s shimmer bricks, etc were out of the question! I ended up enjoying it so I decided to dabble in the highlighter trend.

Colourpop came out with highlighters a few months back and they’re super affordable so I picked a few up. Here the shades…

Left to Right: Highly Waisted, Teasecake, Butterfly Beach, Wisp

Sorry if the swatches aren’t picking up very well but that’s the best I could do for now. So let’s discuss the shades from left to right.

Highly Waisted – soft golden peach with pink and gold duo chrome finishes.

Teasecake – pale pink with a gold and pink duo chrome finish

Butterfly Beach – soft peach with highlights of gold and silver

Wisp – golden champagne with highly reflective hues of gold duo chrome finishes

As far as quality goes, I AM IN LOVE! The texture is like butter. They’re so creamy and pigmented. My personal faves are Highly Waisted and Butterfly Beach. Highly Waisted is a gorgeous rose gold color on my skin. Butterfly Beach is comes off like a golden coral on my cheeks. Teasecake is pretty pink so I would probably use that the least since I don’t do many pink looks. Wisp gives me that bronzy J.Lo vibe so I know I’ll be using that one often.

The price point is $8 each! Yes, only $8. To me that’s incredibly reasonable compared to a lot of other highlighters on the market. So if you’re just trying highlighters for the first time or want to add some new affordable ones to your collection, I’d definitely check out Colourpop!

MUA Spotlight On: Lauren Quiambao

Hey all! I’m finally getting things back on track with this series! So, let me introduce you guys to this beauty!

Lauren is a 22 year old Make Up Artist from Pittsburgh, PA. Growing up in Las Vegas, fashion, art, and city life has always been a part of her lifestyle. Make up came to her at a young age. Maturing through high school, watching Youtube tutorials and practicing on herself – she became known at her high school for being rather good at make up. From doing friends make up at sleepovers, to friends hiring her to do their make up for homecoming and prom dances, it has always been something she loved to do. Come college, she branched out for awhile into art programs such as painting & photography. When finally there was a job posting online for Sephora. This is where it all turned for the better. After studying, taking a test in front of a Sephora Corporate Beauty Educator and finally earning her certification, she realized that this is what she wants to do. This is her passion.

What is your favorite high-end brand?

One of my absolute favorite brands is Make Up Forever. Their foundations are flawless, from sheer coverage to full coverage foundation. There is a product suited for everyone. Their lip liners are a must for any look, waterproof & smudge proof. It’s my go to lip product.

What are 3 makeup items you couldn’t possibly live without?

Eyebrows are a must for me, so my Anastasia Brow Powder in “Granite” is an every day must have. Also, my black winged liner is an every day essential for me. my favorite liner being Kat Von D’s tattoo liner. My favorite everyday lip would be Make Up Forever’s lip liner in “14c

What’s your favorite drugstore brand?

My favorite drugstore brand has to be Eyes Lips Face, also known as E.L.F. It has great products at an amazingly reasonable price. Their lashes are only $1 and perfect for everyday wear!

What type of beauty product do you buy the most of (mascaras, concealers, lipsticks etc)?

My translucent powder from Bare Minerals is probably what I go through the most. I get rather oily in my T-Zone and that powder keeps me nice and matte all day long!

What is the most common makeup faux pas that you see?

Some of the most common faux pas that I see are two of my biggest pet peeves. Clients that want a foundation 5 times darker than their skin color & clients that coat so much mascara on that they start to resemble spider legs.

Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely?

I try to limit myself to “must haves” or specific looks for clients, but sometimes a new product comes out that I just HAVE to try. 😉

What’s your favorite lipstick?

That’s a tough one. I’d say I have 2 favorite lipsticks. Both from Nars being their Audacious collection in “Anna” & their Matte Lip Pencil in “Train Bleu.”

Describe your everyday makeup look.

You’ll never catch me without my contour or eyebrows! That’s a must. I used to be an everyday smokey eye type of girl, but now I limit myself to just a winged liner with a nice medium brown in the crease of my eye.

What’s your favorite mascara?

Currently my favorite mascara obsession would be from the Buxom “Mascara Bar” & I just so happen to use the leopard print one!

Is there any celebrity that you get your makeup inspiration from & why that celebrity?

I would have to say Kylie Jenner. She always looks flawless, while looking as if it took minimal effort. Also, we all know her lip controversy, but she’s been my inspiration for my overdrawn top lip. It really evens out my lips and makes them look much fuller!

Do you have some favorite beauty gurus? If so, who?

Of course I do! Two of my favorites, just happened to recently release two amazing lip collections to their lines! Jeffree Star has been an inspiration to me since MySpace was a “thing”. The colors and boldness that he incorporates into his look are just amazing. Another of my favorites would have to be Anastasia Beverly Hill’s account, her eyebrow products are what first got me attached, but her new lip line is simply gorgeous!

If you could leave the house with only ONE makeup product, which would it be?

It would be a hard battle between lashes & drawing on my brows, since I’m naturally pretty minimal in both. I would have to lean more towards my Anastasia brow powder, since brows are really what enhance and shape the face.

Are there any brands that you try to avoid?

Growing up, Bare Minerals was always a brand I wasn’t found of. I have fallen madly for their eyeshadows though! The pigments are absolutely beautiful.

Do you usually “haul” or buy items here & there?

Honestly? Depends on the bank account! If I’ve got a bit extra to spend, you better believe it’ll be a make up haul! Typically I just go for whatever needs refilled in my collection though.

What’s your favorite skincare brand?

No doubt about it, GlamGlow, is my all time favorite skincare brand. They have a mud mask for all skin types & they newly just released a cleanser collection which I of course am a HUGE fan of! If you haven’t tried it, take it from me. You’ll fall in love with the brand!

What is one beauty tool/brush that you’d recommend to anyone?

A Beauty Blender, hands down. I was always sketchy of the product, that is until I bought one for myself. It flawlessly blends all types of foundations on my skin, and I can’t live without it!

What is one beauty product that you’d recommend to ANYONE & why?

One beauty product I would recommend anyone to try would have to be a Becca highlighter. This brand has an amazing variety of highlighters for all skintones and they gorgeously brighten up anyone’s face!

If you had to give up one makeup item for the rest of your life, which would it be?

Probably blush, I don’t wear it too often, I mainly just stick to a highlight & contour.

What is your absolute pet peeve when it comes to other people’s makeup?

As mentioned before, my absolute pet peeve is when a client wants a foundation shade 5 times darker than their skintone. PLEASE, if you want to be darker, St. Tropez self tanner is your friend people. Then you can go for that darker shade.

Share a beauty tip/trick/hack.. whatever you’d like to call it. Lol

My favorite & clients’ favorite trick is to make the lips look fuller, especially if the top lip is thin while the bottom lip is nice and full. Take your favorite lip liner and line just outside of the top lip to the desired shape, while filling in the bottom lip as normal. And ta da! A Magically evened out full set of lips!

What’s the best way for future clients to reach you?

The best way to reach me is through my cell phone whether it be a call, text, or email. It’s always on me!
