high end makeup

Yearly Favorites of 2015

imhvwtw

Happy New Year! I know I have been going in and out of blogging, but the holidays and work had me on a new type of busy. However, this year I promise to be more consistent :). This is the first time I’m doing a yearly favorites post and I’m sure they’ll be more to come. I tried to add a product from every part of beauty and this is what I came out with. I honestly had to be realistic and think about things that I used constantly. Let’s just jump in, shall we?

Face

  • Murad’s Skin Smoothing Polish is holy grail when it comes to exfoliating. The texture is so finely milled and gives you the squeaky clean feeling you’re dying for when you’ve been wearing makeup all day, every day.
  • Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation is top 3 in my high-end foundation collection. This baby lasts! It makes your skin look flawless. I’ve actual people compliment me on my complexion when I wear this. The finish is flawless. It doesn’t look cakey at all and just makes me feel simply godly. They also have a wide shade range.
  • KVD Lock-It Foundation is my second favorite when it comes to high-end foundation. The formula is on the thicker side, but the coverage is insane. I put this on and sometimes skip concealer and a little goes a long way.
  • Maybelline’s Fit Me Matte + Poreless is the best drugstore foundation I’ve come across since Revlon Colorstay. I haven’t found any drugstore foundation that I’ve loved just as much as Revlon’s Colorstay and this baby comes quite close. The coverage is medium and buildable. It feels great on my skin and I basically used every week since I bought it. I have probably 2 more uses out of it until I buy a new one.
  • LA Girl Pro Conceal is the best concealer out there for frugalistas. The coverage is amazing and so is the texture. The shade range is great as well.
  • NYX’s Dark Circle Concealer is amazing for color correcting. I use this on dark spots and dark circles and it makes a super huge difference.

Eyes

  • Maybelline’s Lash Sensational Mascara is one of my holy grail mascaras from the drugstore. At first, I didn’t enjoy it but I found out how to work with it. Since then, I use it almost every day.
  • Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara is my favorite high-end mascara. The amount of volume this baby gives you is insane. I use it basically every day.
  • Billion Dollar Brows Brow Powder is the best powder I’ve used for brows. I just started using it a month ago but I had to include it. It definitely was a favorite.

Lips

  • Rosebud Salve has been around forever and for good reason. This is the only thing that moisturizes my lips instantly and keeps them moisturized for a long while.
  • Maybelline Touch of Spice is my favorite pinkish lip shade and I would use it every week for like half the year. It’s super soft yet matte.
  • Coloured Raine Cherry Blossom will always be my favorite red shade. This has been my go-to red shade since I bought it.
  • KVD Lolita was another one of my go-to’s this year. I mean I don’t think this shade needs much explanation. Everyone and their mother loved this shade in 2015.

Body

  • Marc Jacobs Daisy was my go-to fragrance this year. That’s saying a lot since I own 10 different fragrances. It’s just delicious.

My favorite high-end brand would probably have to be the brand I work for, which is M•A•C Cosmetics. Our products are amazing!

What is the most common makeup faux pas that you see?

Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely?

I tend to just spend freely. Of course, after my bills & important things are taken care of.

What’s your favorite lipstick?

My favorite lipstick is Myth lipstick by M•A•C Cosmetics. It’s a pretty peachy nude ♥.

Describe your everyday makeup look.

My everyday makeup look would be primer, foundation, two neutral colors on my eyes (normally its Saddle & Rule by M•A•C), Gingerly Blush, Soft & Gentle highlighter, Boldly Bare lip liner, Myth lipstick, Boot Black liner, & Zoom lash mascara.

What’s your favorite mascara?

Favorite mascara is Loreal’s Voluminous Lash.

Is there any celebrity that you get your makeup inspiration from & why that celebrity?

No, I just kind of do my own thing. Lol.

Do you have some favorite beauty gurus? If so, who?

I LOVE Shannxo. She’s amazing!!

If you could leave the house with only ONE makeup product, which would it be?

Dipbrow pomade!

Are there any brands that you try to avoid?

I’m picky when it comes to choosing to venture off to different makeup brands. I’m pretty open to a lot of things, but I just do tons research before hand.

Do you usually “haul” or buy items here & there?

I do a little bit of both actually 🙂

What’s your favorite skincare brand?

My favorite skincare brand ever will have to be M•A•C Cosmetics Lightful C skincare line.

What is one beauty tool/brush that you’d recommend to anyone?

I definitely recommend a fluffy blending brush. It’s a multi-use tool. ♥

What is one beauty product that you’d recommend to ANYONE & why?

I definitely recommend Lightful C Serum. It tones & brightens the skin!!

If you had to give up one makeup item for the rest of your life, which would it be?

I would give up black pencil liner. I never was a fan of black liner in my waterline.

Where do you see your makeup career in 5 years?

I see myself expanding my clientele & also moving up within my company ♥

Share a beauty tip/trick/hack.. whatever you’d like to call it. Lol

My advice to all those is to just keep going! Never give up because you think you’re not good enough for this industry! We all started someplace!

MUA Spotlight On: Maria Luna

Hey, beauties! Happy Friday! Let me introduce you guys to the gorgeous Maria ♥. Maria currently lives in Miami, Florida. She has always had a passion for makeup, She can still remember being so young and sneaking behind her mom’s back and drawing on dark lip liner with a nude lip! LOL. She began to build her kit and investing in herself about 6 years ago and has executed looks for a few women in the hip hop & modeling industry along with a Cover Print. She currently works for  MAC Cosmetics at Aventura Mall, which is a Global Door & #4 in the world. She has been with the company for 2 1/2 years now & still has her own business work as a freelancer outside of her amazing job!

Q&A

What is your favorite high-end brand?

My favorite hIgh-end brand I love would be MAC Cosmetics of course! But definitely have a thing for Kevyn Aucoin & Laura Mercier!

What are 3 makeup items you couldn’t possibly live without?

I couldn’t live without my Kevyn Aucoin, skin enhancer, Laura Mercier Translucent loose powder, MAC Mineralize Skin Finish compact powder, and MAC Fix +, along with brushes. Also, Anastasia’s Dipbrow in Ebony. Ugh! To be real, I couldn’t live without at least a medium size makeup bag!! LOL

What’s your favorite drugstore brand?

My favorite drugstore brand I would say is L’oreal because I absolutely love their mascaras & black gel liners! It’s the smoothest liner I have used yet to date!

What type of beauty product do you buy the most of (mascaras, concealers, lipsticks etc)?

I am a beauty product hoarder of lipsticks and eyeshadows! I think I have about 95 lipsticks and so many eyeshadow palettes from MAC, Urban Decay, Stila, Lorac, Nars, Too Faced and I believe I will continue that forever LOL. I’m also falling in love with primers – lip primers, lash primers, face primers! They really make a difference!!

What is the most common makeup faux pas that you see?

Hmm.. BROWS! I myself take pride in being a Brow Queen. I could give anyone amazing brows. I’ve been seeing blocky brows and brows that look so shiny and unnatural! Also, not lining your lips I truly believe a lip liner is always needed whether you overline or not! As a professional makeup artist working in the beauty industry, I just love an amazing finished lip with beautiful brows!

Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely?

Beauty Budget? What’s that?? haha!! I am terrible with budgets! I pretty much spend on whatever I feel I LOVE and never on something I feel I would never use on myself or for my kit. When I enter a beauty store, it’s like the gates of heaven open up and I hear angels! Nothing else matters.

What’s your favorite lipstick?

My favorite lipstick? As in just ONE? Sheesh…. that’s impossible I absolutely love Limecrime liquid lipsticks in all colors. Also, Anastasia liquid lipsticks in all colors. I LOVE LOVE LOVE MAC. Okay, ya’ll ready for my list? Here it goes! Blankety, HoneyLove, Fleshpot, FlatOut Fabulous, Diva, Sin, Cyber, RiRi Woo (limited), Heroine, Stone… and a few more :).

Describe your everyday makeup look.

Wow, my everyday makeup Look is always a finished full face because of my job! So, I always switch up eye shadow styles and techniques from a beauty look to natural to grungy. That’s what I love about makeup. You can always change things up and still SLAY!

What’s your favorite mascara?

My favorite mascara would be between L’oreal Voluminous & MAC Haute & Naughty! They both have amazing brushes and formulas! I love the consistency and how it applies.

Is there any celebrity that you get your makeup inspiration from & why that celebrity?

A celebrity makeup style that inspires me would hands down have to be Dascha Polanco & her artist Jay Suarez! Hands down. Every time he touches her face it is glam. It is clean. It is natural and is EVERYTHING! He executes amazing looks on her every time and never fails the makeup gods!

Do you have some favorite beauty gurus? If so, who?

My favorite Beauty Guru would definitely be the god himself, Scott Barnes. Also, Renny Vazquez and of course, my fellow MAC brother Romero Jennings!! I really don’t believe I need to explain why. They are by far the most amazing in my opinion.

If you could leave the house with only ONE makeup product, which would it be?

Wow.. what a question.. just thinking about it feels like torture! If I HAD to leave with just ONE.. it would be chapstick!! haha!!

Are there any brands that you try to avoid?

The only thing I try to avoid is lash glue with latex because I’m allergic! Other than that, if I love it it’s mine.

Do you usually “haul” or buy items here & there?

I HAUL, HAUL, HAUL, HAUL. I rarely have time to shop for myself because I’m always with my babies. When I do get some free time, I go IN and ALL OUT and rack up on everything I love!

What’s your favorite skincare brand?

I currently love Dermalogica and I just started using Clarisonic. Their line is so far so good.

What is one beauty tool/brush that you’d recommend to anyone?

MAC brushes! Nothing like MAC brushes, especially #217. That’s holy grail right there!

What is one beauty product that you’d recommend to ANYONE & why?

I would definitely recommend Laura Mercier loose powder! I had it for a while and once I got the chance to try it, I have never put it away! That and also Urban Decay setting spray!!

If you had to give up one makeup item for the rest of your life, which would it be?

Hmmmm…. I would say lip gloss. I have so many but rarely use any.

Where do you see your makeup career in the next 5 years?

Great question! I’m currently working my way up MAC and hope to be a Senior Artist for sure! I see my work on not only celebrities but definitely in some magazines & red carpets! Hey… a girl can DREAM!

Share a beauty tip/trick/hack.. whatever you’d like to call it. Lol

Use line filler to fill in fine lines on your lips and watch those babies plump up! Also, use a business card when applying mascara behind lashes to avoid getting the product on skin!

What’s the best way for future clients to reach you?

I can be reached through direct message on Instagram @Beautyby_Maria or email BeautyByMLuna@gmail.com.

Top 5: Primers

Hey, dears! I’ve realized that I don’t talk about primers too often here, which is insane because I think primer is important. I’m not the kind of person who can wear foundation raw on my face. I need some type of barrier on my skin. Since I’m more oily skinned, I lean more towards matte primers but don’t fret! Some of these primers are good for dry skinned people as well. Let’s just jump in…

First off, let me just say I know some of these primers look like they’ve been through it! But, I figured I might as well still take a photo of them because that just shows you how much I like them haha.

  • L’oreal Revitalift Miracle Blur ($25) This is one of the more pricey drugstore primer options, but I really like it. It leaves a velvety smooth, matte finish and is perfect for blurring lines, wrinkles, uneven skin and pores. It also claims to minimize the appearance of all those things within 4 weeks. I would definitely recommend this to people will more mature skin. My grandma goes hard on this primer and that’s why it looks like that haha.
  • Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Light ($16) I was on a budget so I picked up the travel size, but the full size is $36. This is probably one of my holy grail high-end foundations. It’s ideal for acne prone and oily skin. It’s very lightweight and makes your skin feel godly! It blurs all of your imperfections seamlessly and your makeup will look flawless. I have not one complaint!
  • Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer ($18) Once again, I had to be frugal so I bought the travel size haha. The full size is $52. Anyway, this primer has a satin-finish but I still enjoy it. A little goes a long way and the staying power is amazing. Your skin feels like silk all day long. This primer is ideal for those with dry skin.
  • Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser ($5) For a drugstore primer, this is pretty great! I have been using it for years and the only complaint I have is that it doesn’t control oil as much as would like, but it’s still a pretty damn good primer. It does erase your pores like a dream, though.
  • Becca Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector ($36) This baby is MATTE! So, dry skinned people steer clear. Welcome to the dream oily skinned people! This will keep your face matte all day long.  I went hard on this baby all summer and spring I even used it a bit during the colder months haha. If your face is an oil well, buy this. It will change your life.

Online Shopping Makeup Haul

Hey, babes! So, it was safe to assume that I was going to partake in a haul after my birthday. It’s only a right of passage :). Some of these I bought a few days before my birthday but most of these were bought due to birthday spending. Some of these are oldies that I’m already in love with and some of these are newbies that I’ve never tried. I’m just going to go through each product very briefly, but if you would like a review on anything in specific let me know!

  • Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer – This bronzer is just plain amazing and smells like chocolate! I’ll most likely include it on Hit or Miss Monday.
  • Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara – Everyone and their mother has great things to say about this mascara. We all know I love drugstore mascaras, but it’s time to broaden my horizons.
  • Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation – This is one of my top 5 high-end foundations. I definitely have written about it a few times on the blog.
  • Too Faced Melted Liquid Lipstick (Fig) – We all know I officially love this line of lipsticks! I just had to pick up another one :).
  • e.l.f Blushes (Twinkle Pink, Giddy Gold, Berry Merry) – During the colder months, I’m more of a blush girl. So, I said why not pick up some shimmer blushes since I only have matte ones.
  • Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Light – LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. I definitely will be talking about this soon!
  • L.A. Splash Lip Tint Mousse (Raven) –  I’ve never tried any L.A. Splash products and I thought it was about time to check them out.
  • NARS Lip Pencils (Cruella & Rikugien) These were technically free from Sephora as a birthday gift. I’ve tried NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils but not the satin ones. Cruella is matte, but Rikugien is satin. I’m sure I’ll enjoy them.
  • Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara – This is another popular mascara people talk about. So, I figured why not try it!

If anyone has tried any of these already, let me know! xx

Q&A

What is your favorite high-end brand?

My favorite high-end brand would have to be Laura Mercier.

What are 3 makeup items you couldn’t possibly live without?

Concealer, highlight, and mascara.

What’s your favorite drugstore brand?

I can’t choose between L’Oreal & Maybelline.

What type of beauty product do you buy the most of (mascaras, concealers, lipsticks etc)?

Lipsticks.

What is the most common makeup faux pas that you see?

Extremely bold and overlined brows – my pet peeve.

Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely?

I wouldn’t call it a beauty budget. If I come across a product that I really like, but it’s expensive and I feel like I must have it – I will purchase it. I’ll hold off on other minor products since I made a big purchase. I find myself buying some sort of makeup product at least once every 2 weeks.

What’s your favorite lipstick?

Too Faced Nude Beach, which reminds me I ran out and have to purchase another one lol.

Describe your everyday makeup look.

Foundation, concealer, a little blush and bronzer, a little highlight, mascara, and nude lip if any color at all.

What’s your favorite mascara?

Benefit’s They’re Real mascara or L’Oreal voluminous/telescopic in Carbon Black.

Is there any celebrity that you get your makeup inspiration from & why that celebrity?

I love Megan Fox. We have similar features and her makeup is just always flawless and on point yet natural.

Do you have some favorite beauty gurus? If so, who?

I have a few! I love Jaclyn Hill (who doesn’t?), Amanda Ensing, and my friend Rose (beautybyrosita).

If you could leave the house with only ONE makeup product, which would it be?

Mascara – I love accentuating my lashes.

Are there any brands that you try to avoid?

Well, right now I normally don’t go for high-end products only because I like to use products that I can share with my friends and suggest for them to try out. Makeup can be very expensive and there are so many products out there especially drugstore that are just as great as high end.

Do you usually “haul” or buy items here & there?

Yes, I do haul and I always have products in my “cart” (online) for things I would like to buy in the near future.

What’s your favorite skincare brand?

Lately, I have been using L’Oreal skin care which is pretty good and also Garnier. I also like Neutrogena and First Aid Beauty from Sephora.

What is one beauty tool/brush that you’d recommend to anyone?

BEAUTY BLENDER! You cannot go wrong with the beauty blender sold at Sephora. I normally always use that for applying my foundation.

What is one beauty product that you’d recommend to ANYONE & why?

That’s a tough one.  I can’t decide.

If you had to give up one makeup item for the rest of your life, which would it be?

Wow, that’s a hard one! I’m going to say liquid eyeliner because although it looks great it’s the one item I dread applying whenever I do my makeup. It’s so frustrating when it doesn’t come out even on both eyes and takes a lot of practice. I am still not perfect! lol

What is your absolute pet peeve when it comes to other people’s makeup?

Bold and overlined brows are my biggest pet peeve! I know some people love that look but in my opinion natural is always better.

Share a beauty tip/trick/hack.. whatever you’d like to call it. Lol

The beauty term of “baking” is something I really love to do and I love to watch other people use this technique. It really does make a difference. For those that don’t know, baking is a solid way to set long lasting makeup. After foundation and concealer are applied, you put a thick coat of setting powder under your eyes, cheekbones and bridge of the nose for a few minutes and then sweep it off to achieve that flawless, pore-less and highlighted look.

MUA Spotlight On: Jazmine Kaleo

Hey, my dears ♥! I’m coming at you with another talented makeup artist named Jazmine! Unlike many of the makeup artists featured here on Fashenty, Jazmine didn’t find makeup. Makeup found her. As a young mother, Jazmine was working at Sprint and kicking ass. She was one of the top sellers and was known for it in the Bay Area. One day, she was approached in the mall by a MAC employee who invited her to work for MAC. While Jazmine did like makeup, she didn’t know much about it. However, the employee insisted that she’d get training through MAC. Jazmine went on to work for MAC and became a one of the top sellers there, as well! Now, she a certified makeup artist and has been working for MAC Cosmetics for 2 years.

What’s your favorite drugstore brand?

Hmmmm. I love Baby Lips, so I’d say Maybelline.

What type of beauty product do you buy the most of (mascaras, concealers, lipsticks etc)?

I would probably say that I hoard lashes.

What is the most common makeup faux pas that you see?

Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely?

Wellllllllll, I actually just spend girl. I can’t even lie and I know it’s bad, but I just spend!

What’s your favorite lipstick?

Hmmm, let’s see…. Stone by Mac.

Describe your everyday makeup look.

Well, a lightweight foundation, winged eye, lashes, 2 neutral eyeshadow colors, brows, bronzer on my neck and chest, and blush on my cheeks. I don’t really do lipstick every day because it creases and I don’t have for that during the school day.

What’s your favorite mascara?

Too Faced Better Than Sex!

Is there any celebrity that you get your makeup inspiration from & why that celebrity?

Rihanna. She isn’t afraid to be different. She’s bold with her makeup.

Do you have some favorite beauty gurus? If so, who?

Nicole Guerriero, I love her.

If you could leave the house with only ONE makeup product, which would it be?

My eyebrow pencil, for sure.

Murad and Origins.

What is one beauty tool/brush that you’d recommend to anyone?

The Beauty Blender. It really works and gives you more of a clean, soft finish.

What is one beauty product that you’d recommend to ANYONE & why?

Ummmmmm. Hmmmmmm….I’d probably say Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer. It gives you a natural glow and it’s lightweight.

If you had to give up one makeup item for the rest of your life, which would it be?

Hmmmm, dang that’s hard! You need all of it! I don’t know…maybe eyeliner. I don’t know! Hmm actually, lashes. You can use some products to help with your lashes.

What is your absolute pet peeve when it comes to other people’s makeup?

What irks me the most and I don’t know if it’s because we’re Latina, but when people overline their lips. It just looks so unnatural.

Share a beauty tip/trick/hack.. whatever you’d like to call it. Lol

When applying foundation or concealer, spray MAC Fix + after. It makes your makeup look more natural and less cakey. It also makes your makeup stay on a little longer.

What’s the best way for future clients to reach you?

Through my Instagram @j.kaleo 🙂
