MUA Spotlight On: Natalie Torres

TGIF! It’s about that time that I introduce you to another makeup artist. So let’s go :)…

Natalie is born and raised in the Bronx, NY and has a bachelor’s degree in Media & Communications. She’s have always been into fashion and makeup since she was a little girl. Within the past few years, she started doing freelance work and obtained her certification in makeup artistry this past summer in NYC at Chic Studios. She also just started her YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/natalietorres1) a few weeks ago and her website/blog/portfolio can be viewed on my website www.itsnatalietorres.com.

Q&A

What is your favorite high-end brand?

My favorite high-end brand would have to be Laura Mercier.

What are 3 makeup items you couldn’t possibly live without?

Concealer, highlight, and mascara.

What’s your favorite drugstore brand?

I can’t choose between L’Oreal & Maybelline.

What type of beauty product do you buy the most of (mascaras, concealers, lipsticks etc)?

Lipsticks.

What is the most common makeup faux pas that you see?

Extremely bold and overlined brows – my pet peeve.

Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely?

I wouldn’t call it a beauty budget. If I come across a product that I really like, but it’s expensive and I feel like I must have it – I will purchase it. I’ll hold off on other minor products since I made a big purchase. I find myself buying some sort of makeup product at least once every 2 weeks.

What’s your favorite lipstick?

Too Faced Nude Beach, which reminds me I ran out and have to purchase another one lol.

Describe your everyday makeup look.

Foundation, concealer, a little blush and bronzer, a little highlight, mascara, and nude lip if any color at all.

What’s your favorite mascara?

Benefit’s They’re Real mascara or L’Oreal voluminous/telescopic in Carbon Black.

Is there any celebrity that you get your makeup inspiration from & why that celebrity?

I love Megan Fox. We have similar features and her makeup is just always flawless and on point yet natural.

Do you have some favorite beauty gurus? If so, who?

I have a few! I love Jaclyn Hill (who doesn’t?), Amanda Ensing, and my friend Rose (beautybyrosita).

If you could leave the house with only ONE makeup product, which would it be?

Mascara – I love accentuating my lashes.

Are there any brands that you try to avoid?

Well, right now I normally don’t go for high-end products only because I like to use products that I can share with my friends and suggest for them to try out. Makeup can be very expensive and there are so many products out there especially drugstore that are just as great as high end.

Do you usually “haul” or buy items here & there?

Yes, I do haul and I always have products in my “cart” (online) for things I would like to buy in the near future.

What’s your favorite skincare brand?

Lately, I have been using L’Oreal skin care which is pretty good and also Garnier. I also like Neutrogena and First Aid Beauty from Sephora.

What is one beauty tool/brush that you’d recommend to anyone?

BEAUTY BLENDER! You cannot go wrong with the beauty blender sold at Sephora. I normally always use that for applying my foundation.

What is one beauty product that you’d recommend to ANYONE & why?

That’s a tough one.  I can’t decide.

If you had to give up one makeup item for the rest of your life, which would it be?

Wow, that’s a hard one! I’m going to say liquid eyeliner because although it looks great it’s the one item I dread applying whenever I do my makeup. It’s so frustrating when it doesn’t come out even on both eyes and takes a lot of practice. I am still not perfect! lol

What is your absolute pet peeve when it comes to other people’s makeup?

Bold and overlined brows are my biggest pet peeve! I know some people love that look but in my opinion natural is always better.

Share a beauty tip/trick/hack.. whatever you’d like to call it. Lol

The beauty term of “baking” is something I really love to do and I love to watch other people use this technique. It really does make a difference. For those that don’t know, baking is a solid way to set long lasting makeup. After foundation and concealer are applied, you put a thick coat of setting powder under your eyes, cheekbones and bridge of the nose for a few minutes and then sweep it off to achieve that flawless, pore-less and highlighted look.

MUA Spotlight On: Jazmine Kaleo

Hey, my dears ♥! I’m coming at you with another talented makeup artist named Jazmine! Unlike many of the makeup artists featured here on Fashenty, Jazmine didn’t find makeup. Makeup found her. As a young mother, Jazmine was working at Sprint and kicking ass. She was one of the top sellers and was known for it in the Bay Area. One day, she was approached in the mall by a MAC employee who invited her to work for MAC. While Jazmine did like makeup, she didn’t know much about it. However, the employee insisted that she’d get training through MAC. Jazmine went on to work for MAC and became a one of the top sellers there, as well! Now, she a certified makeup artist and has been working for MAC Cosmetics for 2 years.

Q&A

What is your favorite high-end brand?

Giorgio Armani. I love the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk foundation.

What are 3 makeup items you couldn’t possibly live without?

Okay, 1) MAC Fix +, 2) I need my Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz, and 3) MAC Prolongwear concealer.

What’s your favorite drugstore brand?

Hmmmm. I love Baby Lips, so I’d say Maybelline.

What type of beauty product do you buy the most of (mascaras, concealers, lipsticks etc)?

I would probably say that I hoard lashes.

What is the most common makeup faux pas that you see?

Cake face! You know what I mean? Like when your makeup looks like frosting.

Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely?

Wellllllllll, I actually just spend girl. I can’t even lie and I know it’s bad, but I just spend!

What’s your favorite lipstick?

Hmmm, let’s see…. Stone by Mac.

Describe your everyday makeup look.

Well, a lightweight foundation, winged eye, lashes, 2 neutral eyeshadow colors, brows, bronzer on my neck and chest, and blush on my cheeks. I don’t really do lipstick every day because it creases and I don’t have for that during the school day.

What’s your favorite mascara?

Too Faced Better Than Sex!

Is there any celebrity that you get your makeup inspiration from & why that celebrity?

Rihanna. She isn’t afraid to be different. She’s bold with her makeup.

Do you have some favorite beauty gurus? If so, who?

Nicole Guerriero, I love her.

If you could leave the house with only ONE makeup product, which would it be?

My eyebrow pencil, for sure.

Are there any brands that you try to avoid?

No, I really try everything. I’m open-minded.

Do you usually “haul” or buy items here & there?

I like to haul haha.

What’s your favorite skincare brand?

Murad and Origins.

What is one beauty tool/brush that you’d recommend to anyone?

The Beauty Blender. It really works and gives you more of a clean, soft finish.

What is one beauty product that you’d recommend to ANYONE & why?

Ummmmmm. Hmmmmmm….I’d probably say Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer. It gives you a natural glow and it’s lightweight.

If you had to give up one makeup item for the rest of your life, which would it be?

Hmmmm, dang that’s hard! You need all of it! I don’t know…maybe eyeliner. I don’t know! Hmm actually, lashes. You can use some products to help with your lashes.

What is your absolute pet peeve when it comes to other people’s makeup?

What irks me the most and I don’t know if it’s because we’re Latina, but when people overline their lips. It just looks so unnatural.

Share a beauty tip/trick/hack.. whatever you’d like to call it. Lol

When applying foundation or concealer, spray MAC Fix + after. It makes your makeup look more natural and less cakey. It also makes your makeup stay on a little longer.

What’s the best way for future clients to reach you?

Hit or Miss: Too Faced Born This Way Foundation

(via sephora.com)

Don’t think that the Emmy’s made me forget about “Hit or Miss” Mondays! Let’s jump right into this product review.

So many people have been raving about it and how natural looking it looks. The online description states, “Born This Way is an oil-free foundation that masterfully diffuses the line between makeup and skin. For coverage so undetectable, you can’t see the makeup or the imperfections—just a natural-looking, luminous, flawless complexion. The revolutionary formula is infused with a potent combination of coconut water to naturally replenish moisture levels; nature’s resilient alpine rose to brighten the skin’s appearance and promote elasticity; and hyaluronic acid for a smoother, more youthful appearance.” Anything that oil-free is something worth trying so I picked up a sample 3 weeks ago in the shade Honey.

Ideally, I wanted to use this foundation for about a week before sharing my final thoughts but after 3 uses, I already know how I feel. First off, the shade matched my skin fairly well but it just a smidge more neutral. Th coverage is medium to full and the consistency is on the thicker side. The first time I put it on, I was little taken aback by how my faced look. It looked like I hadn’t put any makeup on but I had a glow. I know that sounds weird, but I felt a little off haha. However, once I finished my full face, I liked it. The natural finish was great and it did look like your skin. The second time I used it, my oily T-zone was just not having it! The foundation was looking greasy and was breaking me out!. I tried it for the last time and noticed even more breakouts and it also faded after about 10 hours of wear. That’s not too crappy as far as longevity goes, but I prefer long wearing foundation. What bugs me the most is the fact that it has caused breakouts on my skin! My skin has been at its best for the past 2 months and I only get a blemish when my period is coming. My skin isn’t sensitive at all. So, I knew it was the foundation’s fault.

Needless to say, I was disappointed by this foundation. I really did want to love it but it’s a MISS in the books for me! If you still want to try it, pick up a sample first. The full price at Sephora is $39.

MUA Spotlight On: Amanda Gonzalez

TGIF! I told you guys I’d be consistent with the MUA Series and this is me delivering 🙂 Let me introduce you to this talented beauty who is all about THE GLOW, Amanda. As a sophomore in high school, Amanda would watch her mother do her makeup every morning. Her mother would wear different colors on her eyes and indulge in the infamous smokey eye – that is when Amanda fell in love with makeup. She learned a bit from her mother and would play with it on herself and her best friend. Once she graduated high school, she waited a year, went to straight to being an MUA at MAC and never looked back!

What’s the best way for future clients to reach you?

MUA Spotlight On: Valery Clermont

Hey dolls! As you know, it’s been a super long time since I’ve had a makeup artist on the blog. It just wasn’t working out,  deadlines weren’t being met but fear no more – we’re back at it! Let me introduce you to this talented, 24 year old, Brooklyn native named Valery. Valery is currently a makeup artist at Sephora and has been doing makeup for 4 years. She started wearing makeup at young age due to the fact that she was a competitive dancer, so it was required. However, she was always fascinated with the fact that you can completely transform yourself with just the touch of a brush. So, she became really interested in makeup and different techniques. Throughout the years, she used her friends as test dummies until she felt completely confident to pursue it professionally.

Q&A

What is your favorite high-end brand?

My favorite high-end brand would have to be Lancome. Their Teint Idole 24hr foundation is my favorite product.

What are 3 makeup items you couldn’t possibly live without?

Three makeup products I couldn’t live without are primer, highlighters and my foundation.

My favorite drugstore brand is NYX. Their lip liners and so creamy and easy to apply and they have a wide range of colors – and let’s not forget their matte lippies.

I’m an eyeshadow junkie. I practically own like every palette out there.

What is the most common makeup faux pas that you see?

The most common makeup faux pas I see is using a bronzer with shimmer to contour. The reason for contouring is to create shadow on the face. Shimmer will only bring out those features instead of shadowing.

Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely?

I definitely have a beauty budget because working at Sephora, I get so tempted to just buy everything I play with. So, I try to pace myself – a few products here and there.

What’s your favorite lipstick?

My favorite lipstick would have to be Technopagan by “OCC. It’s this super vibrant blueish-purple with a metallic finish. Although it’s dramatic, I always get compliments.

My everyday makeup look consist of a full face (contour, highlight and lashes). I live for a dramatic eye so I use every chance I get to experiment with different looks.

What’s your favorite mascara?

My favorite mascara would have to be Better Than Sex by Too Faced. On days when I don’t wear lashes, it gives me a ridiculous amount of volume, length, and curl.

Do you have some favorite beauty gurus? If so, who?

Most definitely!! @irisbeilin @beatfacehoney and @makeupshayla give me life every time I see them pop up on my timeline. They’re so creative and artistic.

If you could leave the house with only ONE makeup product, which would it be?

My Laura Mercier Smooth Focus setting powder!! It instantly eliminates shines.

Are there any brands that you try to avoid?

If you had to give up one makeup item for the rest of your life, which would it be?

If I had to give up one makeup item for the rest of my life it would have to be mascara because I love switching it up with different false lashes.

What is your absolute pet peeve when it comes to other people’s makeup?

My absolute pet peeve would have to be foundation that doesn’t match your neck. For a flawless, even look you want everything to match. So, if you decided to go a shade lighter or darker be sure to blend it down to your neck.

Share a beauty tip/trick/hack.. whatever you’d like to call it. Lol

An easy beauty trick is applying a small amount of your eyeshadow primer under your eyes before applying concealer. It increases the longevity of your concealer and prevents some creasing and settling into fine lines, but always remember to set your undereye with a translucent powder.

Battle of the Brands: L’oreal Infallible Pro-Matte vs Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless

Screen Shot 2015-04-03 at 9.35.23 AM

Happy Friday loves. I’ve been wanting to compare these 2 drugstore foundations forever and I finally picked them up last Friday! I’ve been testing both of these foundations for a week, alternating which I use day by day. I’m judging these foundations based on 4 things: texture/formula, longevity, price, and color. So let’s just jump, shall we?

Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Claims:

  • Mattifies, erases pores and matches natural tone.
  • Goes beyond skin tone matching to fit the unique texture issues of normal to oily skin.

L’oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Claims:

  • Lasts for 24 hours
  • Contains Shine Defy Blotting Spheres that act like blotting paper to mimic makeup artist gesture, instantly absorbing sweat and oil without disturbing color pigments.

Criteria

Color: Okay so both of these foundations don’t have a huge color selection. Both foundations have 12 shades but they didn’t have all the shades at the Ulta I was at . Personally, I think a foundation should have at least 15 shades to cater to almost every skin tone. L’oreal was probably the worst to choose from because you can’t tell the color from the outside. You’re going in there blind because all of the shades basically look the same from the outside. I chose Caramel Beige since that’s my L’oreal True Match color, but I found that it’s a smidge light for me. For the MNY foundation, my color is 322 Warm Honey and it fits my skin impeccably. It literally blended into my skintone.

Texture/Formula: I tried 2 primers with these foundations: MNY Baby Skin and Becca’s Ever Matte Poreless Priming Perfector. The L’oreal Infallible with the Becca primer is NOT good. My skin looked dry around my nose and forehead and it was just ugh! It was no good at all!! When I paired it with the Baby Skin, it was better but I found that it did look a bit dry in some areas, which is insane because my nose is one of the oiliest spots on my face. So rest assured, this foundation is MATTE! It’s also a full coverage foundation to me. Also, I find that I rather use a flat top kabuki or my Real Technique Expert Face Brush to apply this foundation. Due to the fact that it dries pretty fast, I don’t like to use my beauty blender. I also find that this foundation exemplifies my pores, which is a HUGE downfall for me.

The MNY foundation is very smooth. It applies impeccably with either a beauty blender or a brush. My pores are gone after I apply the foundation. I honestly can barely see them. It worked well with both the Becca and Baby Skin primer. It wasn’t patchy at all. It’s definitely a matte finish, but it’s not drying. I would say this foundation is medium to full coverage.

Longevity: L’oreal Infallible claims it lasts up to 24 hours. I used it yesterday for about 12 hours. By the time I got home, I realized there were spots around my nose which makeup had rubbed off from but that was about it. MNY Fit Me Matte + Poreless doesn’t personally claim any type of long wearing attributes, but I think it lasts as long as the average foundation – about 8-10 hours.

Price: L’oreal is always a more expensive drugstore brand. I picked it up at Ulta for $14.99. Meanwhile I picked up the MNY foundation for $7.99

Clearly, by my breakdown, you can see that I love the MNY Fit Me Matte + Poreless more than the L’oreal Infallible Pro-Matte. I find that I get a more of a bang for my buck. The formula is bomb. The finish is bomb. The price is bomb. The color is bomb. It’s just BOMB.COM! I was overall disappointed with the L’oreal Infallible Pro-Matte, but at least I’ve found my new holy grail drugstore foundation. However, I wouldn’t suggest either of these foundations to those with dry skin, especially not the L’oreal.

MNY Fit Me Matte + Poreless: 10/10

L’oreal Infallible Pro-Matte: 7/10

I hope this review helped!

Hit or Miss: NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation

(via sephora.com)

Good Afternoon all! I’ve been dying to review this foundation but I wanted to hold off because to make sure my opinions were FINAL. I picked up a sample of this in January. Yes, I’ve been holding out on your guys for 2 months!  Don’t kill me! You’re gonna appreciate this review. Let’s get down to it.

I expected to hate this foundation because anything with “luminous” or “glowing” just makes me more oily looking – except the Giorgio Armani foundation. So, I was hesitant to even try this foundation. However, since there is no more NARS Sheer Matte, I figured what the hey. Sephora.com says, “Achieve full-coverage, lightweight foundation that leaves a natural finish. Highly pigmented and perfectly balanced, this breakthrough, full-coverage formula builds and blends effortlessly. Its Even Tone Technology instantly neutralizes redness and dullness, while it works to reduce discoloration for more even, uniform skin. Perfect for all skin types, it features Weightless Long-wear Technology, an exclusive blend from NARS with flexible polymers and treated pigments that move with the skin while providing 16 hours of staying power.” Also, supposedly one drop of this stuff is enough for you whole face. I don’t use my foundation in drops. I just put some on my finger and dot it on my face. However, the foundation DOES come with a pump if you’re about that “one drop” life.

What do I think of it? I FREAKING LOVE IT!!!!!! I would never expect to fall in love with a “luminous” foundation like I did with this one. I love Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk but that price – girrrrrlllll, I CANNOT. I’m not dishing out $62 for a foundation every time I run out. I’m not doing that – not even for the Vine. However, this foundation is high end too. It costs $48 but I don’t mind that at all. The consistency is very fluid-like. It’s very liquidy. It’s very lightweight and natural looking. A little goes a long way but you need more than one drop for sure. I wouldn’t use more than 3 drops though. The coverage is medium but I would say it’s buildable. The best way to apply it in my opinion is with a beauty blender. You will look FLAWLESS. It has a pretty good staying power and it has me looking like a radiant goddess. I used it for my makeup here. I absolutely loved it. For an oily beast like me to say she loves a luminous foundation is insane, but I do – it’s oil free!! I would recommend this to anyone! It’s the best HIT I’ve done!
