MUA Spotlight On: Jan Degillo

Hey, beauties! Let me introduce you to the talented Jan, She just turned 27 and is a recently certified makeup artist. She works in Beverly Hills as an Ophthalmic Technician (aka she checks your vision at the eye doctor.) Born and raised in the SF Bay Area, she needed a change. She desired growth, so she moved to LA six months ago to pursue her love for makeup. She fell into the love for makeup due to her love for collecting MAC lipsticks. Her collection became large enough for her boyfriend to notice and tell her that she’d better start using them on other people lol! She started doing her friends’ makeup and decided to put herself in school. She just finished the basics class and the Special Effects class.

Q&A

What is your favorite high-end brand?

I LOVE everything Anastasia. I am often asked about my brows and my lips, which is always Anastasia (if I don’t have Kat Von D or MAC on the lips.)

What are 3 makeup items you couldn’t possibly live without?

Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow: My eyebrows are done so perfectly and more precise with this product. It’s definitely my holy grail item for brows. Kat Von D Everlasting Love liquid lipsticks: I love how long lasting and pigmented these lippies are. They don’t come off when I eat and it literally doesn’t feel like I even have anything on. I can wear this lipstick everywhere and most importantly at work in the office. Make Up For Ever Aqua Seal: Oh my God, I love this product! I have somewhat of a hooded lid and a huge problem for me is when my eyeliner transfers product to my crease. So, when I do my liner now I just mix in Aqua Seal and my liner stays put all day!

What’s your favorite drugstore brand?

L’oreal Infallible Pro Matte foundation 108 in Caramel Beige. This product just makes my skin look so smooth & matte. It just oxidizes with my skin so beautifully! It doesn’t break me out and it’s totally buildable. By the end of the day, my oily t-zone makes me look exhausted and I love that this foundation keeps me looking put together. If we’re talking just brands, I love Maybelline the most!

What type of beauty product do you buy the most of (mascaras, concealers, lipsticks etc)?

Definitely, definitely, definitely LIPSTICK! Come to my apartment and you’ll find at least one lipstick in each room. At least two in the bathroom, one on the living room shelf, in my car, in my purse, and of course, the rest sitting on my vanity. I never leave the house without lipstick on.

What is the most common makeup faux pas that you see?

I’m obsessed with staring at people’s eyebrows – I literally fix them in my head. I hate blocky eyebrows at the front of the brow and I hate brows that are not cleaned up with concealer!

Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely?

As far as a “beauty budget” goes, I buy strictly for my kit. I try to buy things that I can use for multiple reasons. I’ll buy a pretty highlighter that I can use as shimmery shadow, a cream blush that I can use as shadow or lipstick, and a concealer that can also be used as foundation if I’m not looking to do lots of cover. The times that I do want to spend freely will go to products that I know will translate well on camera. I do lots of photo shoot makeup so I invest in quality face products like foundation, concealer, & bronzer/blush.

What’s your favorite lipstick?

My favorite lipstick? As in just one? Do you know how hard that is? There are so many colors that I LOVE and obsess over but if I had to pick only one it would be Kat Von D’s Lolita liquid lipstick. That color goes with everything! It’s one of my most used lipsticks next to Mac’s Riri Woo (sorry I had to throw that one in there as a fave too haha!)

Describe your everyday makeup look.

I work in a medical office so I try to keep it as simple as possible. For the days where I need to rush out the house, I’ll have my brows done, mascara on, concealer on to hide my blemishes, and a gloss to make me look put together. The days that do I have extra time I’ll go with foundation, blush, and lipstick. If I wake up early, I’ll put a full face on including lashes & a subtle shimmery brown smokey eye with a winged liner.

What’s your favorite mascara?

My two favorite mascaras right now are L’oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes mascara and Make Up For Ever Smokey Extravagant mascara. Both volumizing and lengthening – the two key things I require of my mascara to do!

Is there any celebrity that you get your makeup inspiration from & why that celebrity?

RIHANNA! Her look is so badass – OBSESSED! She has this beautiful glow in all of her shoots and her makeup just translates so well. From her skin, to her eyes, to her lips – she just entrances the audience. That is what I want to achieve for the makeup looks I do. I want it to translate so well on camera that you’re just in awe of the work.

Do you have some favorite beauty gurus? If so, who?

Desi Perkins (@desimakeup) and Karen Sarahi (@iluvsarahii) Whenever I’m looking for a new technique or if I’m feeling uninspired I look on their Instagram & end up feeling so motivated to throw glitter everywhere – they totally glow! They’re both such beautiful people. They work so hard and definitely are living out their dreams. It’s so encouraging to know that it’s definitely possible to make a living off of makeup full time!

If you could leave the house with only ONE makeup product, which would it be?

An eyebrow pencil! So that I can do my brows and line my eyes! I never leave the house with bare brows – are you crazy?!

Are there any brands that you try to avoid?

Not that I “stay away” but for some reason Cover Girl products never appealed to me. Hourglass either. Not a swatch or even a browse. That makes me want to research some reviews now lol.

Do you usually “haul” or buy items here & there?

I used to do hauls, but now I’ve got more than enough. Lately, I just replenish items or buy when I’m curious about a product. I really need to buy a bigger train case soon!

What’s your favorite skincare brand?

Embryolisse! Amazing amazing stuff it makes my skin feel so hydrated and moisturized! I prefer the Lait-Creme and the Hydra-Mat moisturizers for myself. I try not to recommend skin products because everyone is different. I made the mistake once of recommending eye cream to a friend and she found out she was allergic to an ingredient! I felt terrible!

What is one beauty tool/brush that you’d recommend to anyone?

Duh! A Beauty Blender! It definitely helps my skin take in the moisturizers & the primers and of course, blends my foundation so seamlessly. I hardly use a brush for my foundation anymore! And it also helps when I “bake” under my eyes.

What is one beauty product that you’d recommend to ANYONE & why?

DUO eyelash glue – the green one for strip lashes! I always get asked how I even “get those things on.” This particular eyelash glue does the trick every time. It gets tacky very fast and makes application clean & easy. I think what discourages people from wearing falsies is 1.) it’s already hard enough figuring how to get the strip lash off the holder and 2.) having to deal with the mess of gooey white glue that gets all over and dries way too slow.

If you had to give up one makeup item for the rest of your life, which would it be?

An eyelash curler – I have curly lashes already so it’s totally not used in my kit.

Where do you see your makeup career in the next 5 years?

I’d love to do more photo shoots, and since I’m in LA I’d love to be a red carpet MUA. Since I’m starting Special Effects, that’ll open newer doors so we’ll see where it goes. I love my makeup career so much. It’s a total adventure meeting new people right now. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet such talented people and I can’t wait to see where my career takes me in the next 5 years!

Share a beauty tip/trick/hack.. whatever you’d like to call it. Lol

I always get asked about contouring. First take your hands and feel your face – feel the place where your teeth meet. That is where you start your contour so start your brush with the product there and sweep down into that groove and LIGHTLY sweep up towards your nose thereafter. Remember that less product is best as it can be built up! And please remember that most of the product should be placed at that point where your teeth meet. Your makeup should make sense, and a big dark brown contour does not make sense where your nose is!

What’s the best way for future clients to reach you?

All clients should correspond via email: JDegillo3@gmail.com or Instagram @jan.doe_ I answer within a day. And if I have at least one week’s notice I am available. I typically do shoots or events all Saturday and only Sunday morning.

MUA Spotlight On: Breana Otey

Hey, babes! Let me introduce you to this beauty Breana ♥ She’s a 22-year-old makeup artist, photographer, and cosmetologist from California. She was raised in a small town called Upland in the state of California just about 40 minutes inland from Los Angeles. She’s been a freelance makeup artist since 2010. Her first serious gig was her cousin’s quince, but before that she had always done makeup on herself, friends, and family just for fun. She was first introduced to makeup in the 8th grade when she entered Uplands beauty pageant and won! After that, she found herself at Sephora almost every weekend, she is NOT exaggerating haha. When she got into high school that’s when she started playing with different looks. She wasn’t that good to be honest and some girls made that clear to her by making fun of how much makeup I applied on myself, but she didn’t care! She loved experimenting. Practice makes perfect and she still learns something every day! She loves studying the art of makeup.

Q&A

What is your favorite high-end brand?

My favorite high end brand would have to be…that’s tough… right now I’m loving Anastasia Beverly Hills. They’re expanding & I love it.

What are 3 makeup items you couldn’t possibly live without?

I could not live without my Ben Nye Banana Powder, ABH Dipbrow Pomade in Dark Brown, and my Rimmel London Scandaleyes Mascara.

What’s your favorite drugstore brand?

As of right now I am obsessing over LA girl cosmetics…$3 creamy concealers?! Umm, yes!!

What type of beauty product do you buy the most of (mascaras, concealers, lipsticks etc)?

I find myself always buying mascaras, MAC lipsticks, brushes, and eye shadow palettes.

What is the most common makeup faux pas that you see?

I would say contouring. I see some people using too light of highlight under their eyes instead of picking a highlight SLIGHTLY lighter than their skin tone!

Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely?

I usually create a big list of products I need to restock and new items I want to try out. Then I wait until I have saved enough & go crazy. My budget is always around $150. I get a lot of goodies with my pro discounts :).

What’s your favorite lipstick?

My all time favorite lipstick is MAC’s Velvet Teddy! I wear it pretty much every day.

Describe your everyday makeup look.

My everyday makeup look consists of matte foundation, a contoured face, dramatic black lashes, and a nude lip!

What’s your favorite mascara?

Rimmel London Scandaleyes Mascara and Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara.

Is there any celebrity that you get your makeup inspiration from & why that celebrity?

Rihanna. She’s just gorgeous all around. I love her edgy glam vibe.

Do you have some favorite beauty gurus? If so, who?

Yes! I love watching Desi Perkins & MsRoshPosh.

If you could leave the house with only ONE makeup product, which would it be?

I always have a mascara tube in my handbag… always.

Are there any brands that you try to avoid?

I stay away from MAC liquid foundations for sure… and YSL because I know I’ll probably fall in love, but they are a little out of my budget lol.

Do you usually “haul” or buy items here & there?

I definitely get most of my makeup in big hauls, but when I go to beauty stores or target I can’t help buying at least one cosmetic item. Yes, I have a problem lol.

What’s your favorite skincare brand?

My favorite skin care brand is Acne.org ! my face was saved because of them.

What is one beauty tool/brush that you’d recommend to anyone?

Bdellium tools Buffing brush #959 (favorite).

What is one beauty product that you’d recommend to ANYONE & why?

Anastasia Beverly Hills brow products! They have realistic color tones that look natural on the face instead of those other brands with pigments that are too orange, brown or too dark.

If you had to give up one makeup item for the rest of your life, which would it be?

I can live without Black Eyeliner…we aren’t working out.

What is your absolute pet peeve when it comes to other people’s makeup?

The eyebrow game is getting better, but I still find some people who need to watch more tutorials.  Eyebrows can make or break your whole look.

Share a beauty tip/trick/hack.. whatever you’d like to call it. Lol

Use green concealer to cover redness/acne marks. That will help you cover the redness much easier without caking on the makeup.

What’s the best way for future clients to reach you?

Last Minute Halloween Looks

Hey, people! Halloween is literally just around the corner and I’m sure plenty of you haven’t decided what the hell you’re gonna do or even if you’re gonna be doing anything, for that matter. Luckily, I have a few, super easy, last minute Halloween looks to share with you! For these, you won’t necessarily need a costume unless you want to go all out. So, let’s get started!

Runaway Bride (via rocknrollbride.com)

This look is super easy. All you need is simple bridal makeup, a white outfit, sneakers, and a veil or bouquet. There are tons of bridal makeup looks on Youtube and I’m sure everyone has a pair of sneakers at home. A white outfit and veil/bouquet shouldn’t be hard to find, either. It’s not like you’re going to a real wedding! You can wear sweats and a veil to make it really look casual, too haha. Like a bride running away, before she even gets in her dress.

80’s girl (via yve-style.com)

For this look, just think bright, colorful, and bold. Tease that hair like a mofo. Use all the bright, colorful colors in your makeup collection. Layer on the accessories and wear a bright outfit. Leggings, legwarmers, slouchy tops, and spandex are all great options!

Skeleton (via Pinterest)

For this look, the costume is irrelevant. Wearing all black will suffice. The makeup takes over this look. All you need is white, gray, and black face paint and a few makeup brushes for detail work. The makeup process will take a little bit of time but nothing insane!

Cat (via Pinterest)

A costume for this is optional. This look would be fine with just the makeup and cat ears. For costume options, you can wear all black and buy a tail or just wear a leotard.

Wednesday Addams (via Pinterest)

For this look, the costume is a bit more important but you don’t need to follow it to the T. I would suggest a collared shirt with a black dress over it or a black dress alone will suffice. You definitely need to do Wednesday’s signature braids. You will also need to make that face super pale and the eyes a bit sunken. Check out some makeup tutorials on Youtube.

Doll (via Pinterest)

This makeup look is pretty easy. To make it more realistic, there are a few tutorials on Youtube to make yourself look like a cracked doll. For the outfit, I’d just wear a dainty dress.

Vampire (via Pinterest)

A vampire look may seem like it needs more effort, but all you NEED is dark makeup and fangs. Blood is optional because once you have fangs, it’s pretty much self-explanatory. I recommend Carli Bybel’s and Desi Perkins’s vampire makeup tutorials on Youtube. Also, with all these modern day vampire tv shows, the outfit is irrelevant. You can feel free to wear regular clothes haha. It’s all about the makeup here.

Zombie (via Pinterest)

For the outfit, just wear ripped, dirty clothes. The makeup look is fairly simple. However, if you want to add wounds you’re gonna need fake blood and oatmeal or tissue paper. Check out some tutorials on Youtube.

Halloween Makeup Looks

Hey, all! With Halloween around the corner, I think it’s about time that I spoke about some fun and creepy Halloween makeup looks! Almost all of these would need a costume to complete the look and some of them need special effects makeup (SFX). For SFX makeup, I highly recommend purchasing from Mehron. That got the juice when it comes to costume makeup. For those of you who don’t like to go all out and like to keep your looks simple and easy, don’t fret! I will have another post talking about “last minute” Halloween makeup/outfit ideas. However, this post is for those of you Halloween stans who like to plan ahead! So let’s get on to these looks…

Bride of Frankenstein (via Pinterest)

Desi Perkins slayed with this Bride of Frankenstein makeup look! I used her tutorial to learn how to do my fake stitches in the photo above. This is a perfect look for those of you who want to serve creepy but glam at the same time.

Little Red “Rotting” Hood (via Pinterest)

To me, Nicole Guerriero is the QUEEN of Halloween makeup tutorials on Youtube. She literally goes all out! I wanted to do this look last year, but since I didn’t have any plans I ended up not doing it. She actually uses some Mehron products in this look.

Zombie Cleopatra (via Pinterest)

Amanda Ensing did a pretty damn good job with her zombie Cleopatra! One of the good things about this look is that she did the wound without using SFX. She used adhesive and tissue paper.

Evil Killer Clown (via Pinterest)

This look is just plain creepy, but dope at the same time. I personally would pair this with a carnival-like outfit and a bloody, FAKE knife.

Evil Queen of the Tribe (via Pinterest)

I probably should’ve mentioned that Nicole Guerriero was going to be featured a few times in this post haha. Sorry, not sorry. I can’t help it if she nails so many Halloween looks! Plus, this look is so unique. You wouldn’t think of this look off the top of your head. If you don’t want the evil version, she also does a good version in the same video.

Pop Art (via Pinterest)

Although Pop Art makeup is tedious to do, it looks amazing! I’m a fan of anything fun and retro.

Ice Queen (via youtube)

This look is just whimsical glam and I simply love it. Not everyone likes to be super creepy and I totally get it 🙂

Galaxy Chic

This is the most creative thing I’ve ever seen on Youtube, makeup wise. Now, this wasn’t meant to be a Halloween look. Nicole did it just because she was feeling alien-like haha. Either way, this would probably be one of the boldest and  most creative looks for Halloween. I would wear this with a silver jumpsuit or something galaxy like.

Demon (via Pinterest)

When I think demon, I think of the demons on Supernatural. Those big black pupils just define “demon” in my eyes. I think this look is great on its own or with a costume.

Zombie Flapper (via Pinterest)

This is another look Desi Perkins executed flawlessly! I plan to be a zombie flapper this Halloween, but just a bit more toned down.

I hope this post gave you guys some inspiration! xx

MUA Spotlight On: Joanna Alva

TGIF! It’s about that time again to meet another talented MUA. Let me introduce you guys to Joanna ♥. She was born and raised in Sunnyvale, California. By profession, she’s a Paralegal and a Notary Public. Her passion for makeup started at a young age, however, she hadn’t fully emerged until a year ago. When she graduated high school she considered going to cosmetology school, but the idea of doing hair and nails wasn’t appealing to her. What steered her towards makeup recently was that she craved creativity in a way that she was not able to express at work.  After doing a lot of research on different schools, she decided to take a certified makeup course with a local makeup artist. The reason why she didn’t want to take a mainstream beauty school course is because she felt it was more beneficial to learn from a makeup artist who was currently working in the field and who could give her real life experience. She’s learned a lot and has applied everything she’s learned to her freelance work.

Q&A

What is your favorite high-end brand?

I’m currently obsessed with anything and everything Anastasia Beverly Hills. There are a lot of amazing brands like Urban Decay, Kat Von D, Nars and Make Up For Ever, but my obsession at the moment is definitely ABH.

What are 3 makeup items you couldn’t possibly live without?

I’m going to have to go with 1) ABH brow powder, because I could probably double up and use it as a shadow, 2) ABH Liquid Lipstick in Dusty Rose, because the formula and color are simply to die for, and 3) the Sephora Collection High Precision Liquid Liner in Black. I feel like a bold lip, fierce liner and well-defined brows are all a girl really needs. Everything else is just fun and creativity.

What’s your favorite drugstore brand?

I can honestly say I’m a huge fan of E.L.F. Cosmetics. I feel like they’ve done such a good job of bringing affordable products to the public that get the job done. Yes, I can rave about Maybelline and L’Oreal. Their products are great, but to be completely honest, when I think “drugstore” I think affordability, and yes they’re affordable, but it’s not that big of a jump in comparison to say Sephora brands. E.L.F. is definitely the most affordable and I commend them for that.

What type of beauty product do you buy the most of (mascaras, concealers, lipsticks etc)?

I tend to gravitate towards buying lip products, i.e liquid lipsticks, lip pencils, glosses, etc. I love how a lipstick can totally change a look, from subtle and natural to bold and edgy.

What is the most common makeup faux pas that you see?

Brows!!! I’m not a fan of “mad brows”. LOL

Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely?

I definitely don’t have a beauty budget, but that doesn’t mean I don’t shop with the beauty budget mindset if that makes sense. I like to limit myself to shopping when I know I’m getting a good deal.

What’s your favorite lipstick?

As mentioned before, I’m in love with ABH Liquid Lipstick in Dusty Rose, but I am also liking Kat Von D’s Lolita.

Describe your everyday makeup look.

This is a hard one, I don’t really have an “everyday” make up look. I tend to coordinate my outfits with certain makeup looks. However, with that said, I do wear a lot of black and my “everyday” look would consist of a black winged liner with some Demi Wispies, light contour, blush/bronzer, highlight, and a colored lip.

What’s your favorite mascara?

Favorite mascara goes to Benefit They’re Real.

Is there any celebrity that you get your makeup inspiration from & why that celebrity?

Rachel Bilson, Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis – basically all women who have a cute sense of style and their makeup is more on the classic side.

Do you have some favorite beauty gurus? If so, who?

There are quite a few Youtube/make up gurus that just look flawless every time. Huda Kattan, Jaclyn Hill, Desi Perkins, LustreLux, Christen Dominique, DressYourFace, the list goes on. But, these ladies are my makeup inspirations for sure.

If you could leave the house with only ONE makeup product, which would it be?

Just one?!?!? Okay, I’m going to say a lipstick, because there are always sunglasses. 😉

Are there any brands that you try to avoid?

I’m pretty open to all brands, I think some are just amazing all around and everything you buy is great. Other times it’s a bit of trial and error until you find a product you like. I don’t like saying I dislike a certain brand unless I’ve tried everything they have to offer, which is pretty hard. I may say I don’t like certain products, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t something else they have that I don’t absolutely love.

Do you usually “haul” or buy items here & there?

I haul, and mostly at Sephora. There are so many things in that store, you go in looking specifically for one thing, you come out with your hands full.

What’s your favorite skincare brand?

I wouldn’t be able to give you specifics just yet. Skincare is something that I’ve just begun experimenting on. There are so many brands and they all have different purposes. However, I am currently using some Origins products that I like (ie. face wash, exfoliant, eye cream, and night cream).

What is one beauty tool/brush that you’d recommend to anyone?

The Beauty Blender without a doubt. I use it for foundation, concealer, setting powder. I think everyone can benefit from getting one.

What is one beauty product that you’d recommend to ANYONE & why?

do actually recommend falsies to everyone I meet. Although it is a bit tough to get the hang of putting them on, I think they are super flattering on everyone, and there are different styles to match different personalities.

If you had to give up one makeup item for the rest of your life, which would it be?

Mascara, I skip that step often when applying falsies, as long as I curl my lashes I’m good to go.

What is your absolute pet peeve when it comes to other people’s makeup?

I said brows already in the sense that some people overline their brows, create unnatural arches, or create their brows according to their mood, but another pet peeve of mine is brow grooming. I like well-kept brows. I’m also not a fan of shaved off brows.

Share a beauty tip/trick/hack.. whatever you’d like to call it. Lol

I think going with a bold wing can be difficult unless you’ve had a lot of practice, but, believe me, we all have our moments. I like to look directly in the mirror and slowly draw small lines, going back and forth between both eyes making sure the wings are symmetrical. Sometimes you can get too ahead of yourself and draw one really good wing, then the challenge is getting the angles to match. I haven’t tried the stencils yet, however, it seems like an awesome idea.

What’s the best way for future clients to reach you?

Future Clients can reach me by email at joanna@beautybyja.com or text at (408) 702-0964. Since I work during the week, it’s often a hit or miss if they call. But texts and emails I find are easy to get back to. With at least a weeks notice, I can make any day and time work.

Fall 2015 Beauty Trends

(via weheartit.com)

Hey, babies! Yesterday’s weather in NYC was a tiny taste of the weather to come this fall season and I was LIVING. So now that I truly feel that within the next week we will truly be in fall, I want to share all the best beauty trends this season. Let’s just jump in, shall we?

  • Dark, Rich Lip Colors If you didn’t know by now, brown lips are IN. Brown is literally the best color lip color right now. However, if that’s not your thing, rich deep plum colors are the rave as well. My personal recommendations are Melt Catsuit, MAC Film Noir, NARS Train Bleu, Wet n Wild Vamp It Up, and MAC Media.

  • Bold, Red Lips This may not be groundbreaking, but it’s a classic! Who doesn’t love a red lip? My ultimate favorite red lip colors that make a statement are NYX Pure Red, NYX Snow White, Coloured Raine Cherry Blossom, and L’oreal Colour Riche The Reds Collection in Eva’s Red.

  • Metallics Bold, metallic eye makeup is all the rave right now, especially bronzed metallics. If you about that bronze, sultry life then definitely check out Desi Perkin’s channel on YouTube. She is one of the bronzed goddesses of the YT!

  • Flushed Cheeks Light pink, rosy cheeks are catching tons of attention. In my opinion, it brings out the natural glow. If you’re more about subtle makeup looks, then this is the trend for you.
