MUA Spotlight On: Miixa Secundo

Let me introduce you to this beauty, Miixa Secundo, She lives in Santa Ana, California and her makeup career isn’t much like everyone else’s.  She didn’t grow up in love or fascinated much by makeup, because her mom was a bit of a tomboy and makeup was definitely not her strong suit!  It wasn’t until Miixa was in college and started obsessing over youtube gurus that her fascination with makeup began.  She started playing with makeup and became quite good at it. Then, she landed her first counter job at a Macy’s.  She worked there a couple years and then, after feeling confident enough in her skills, decided to apply for MAC.  She landed the job, and 7 months later, she is still with the company!  She also makes Youtube videos on the side, because thats what started it all. It seemed only fitting for it to all go full circle!

Q&A

What is your favorite high-end brand?

If I had to choose just one, it would be YSL!  Sometimes with luxury brands you end up paying mostly for the brand, but I can definitely say that the quality of YSL products is worth the money!

What are 3 makeup items you couldn’t possibly live without?

Oh goodness, this is tough! For one, I don’t think i could do without falsies!  If i ever go a day without them, it feels like my look isn’t complete!  My brows are one of my best assets and one of the things i get complimented on the most so I could not go a day without my MAC spiked pencils! I have a whole stash of backups because I’m afraid I’ll run out! And lastly, I love me some highlighter, and my must have is The Balm’s MaryLou Manizer!

What’s your favorite drugstore brand?

Hands down, Milani!  They have some of the best lipsticks and blushes!

What type of beauty product do you buy the most of (mascaras, concealers, lipsticks etc)?

I am a blushaholic, and a concealer junkie!  No matter how many blushes i have that look almost identical, or however many concealers i have that serve the same purpose, its never enough

What is the most common makeup faux pas that you see?

The most common mistake I see, especially on more mature clients, is that they use shimmery/frosty eyeshadows.  For a more flattering look, stick to more matte shadows because they won’t draw attention to any fine lines or wrinkles

Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely?

When I first started collecting makeup I would only allow myself to spend on one single product a week, because it seemed insane for me to spend so much at once.  Now that makeup is my job, I don’t necessarily have a budget per se, but I do try and be reasonable and not spend excessively!

What’s your favorite lipstick?

Thats a hard one because Im constantly discovering new colors, but I find myself reaching for MACs blankety a lot lately!

Describe your everyday makeup look.

Being a MAC makeup artist makes it hard for me to have an “everyday” look, because were constantly challenged to try new looks.  Lately though, I’ve been doing cut creases, because i think they are so glamorous and playful, and very sophisticated.  For my face I always do a super full coverage  foundation, topped with a lot of contouring and a lot of highlighter!  And for lips, I always try and change it up.

What’s your favorite mascara?

By far, the Dior Diorshow mascara in the regular formula.  I have very hard to curl lashes and would always use waterproof to make my lashes look perky, but because I use lashes it seems pointless to use waterproof mascaras everyday.  I also have a hard time with mascaras smudging, and the Dior Diorshow mascara is the only non waterproof mascara that doesn’t smudge or flake on me!

Is there any celebrity that you get your makeup inspiration from & why that celebrity?

I would say that there is no one celebrity per se, I usually get my inspiration from girls on instagram!  There is so much talent on there, that celebrities really can’t compete!

Do you have some favorite beauty gurus? If so, who?

Oh god yes!  Beauty gurus are who inspired me to be who i am now!  Jaclyn Hill is the queen of all beauty gurus!  I discovered her very early on when she was still working for MAC and I fell in love with her ever since.   Honestly, all the knowledge I have is mostly from her!  I also love Shannon from Shaaanxo, Amanda Ensing, Sona Gasparian, Makeup Geek, Nikki Tutorials, Promise Phan, oh gosh the list goes on and on!

If you could leave the house with only ONE makeup product, which would it be?

That would most likely be concealer!  I have issues with hyper pigmentation – meaning that for every break out I get whether I pick at it or not, always leaves a scar behind.  I do use a fade cream to get rid of the pigmentation and it helps, but I do struggle with that so I like to apply a little concealer just to those areas to make my skin look more even!

Are there any brands that you try to avoid?

Not necessarily.  I will try just about any brands so that I can develop my own opinions about them!

Do you usually “haul” or buy items here & there?

I do both. I purchase items here and there with new releases and such, but i will usually haul items when it comes to products I’ve been wanting to try for a while, or whenever theres a sale going on!

What’s your favorite skincare brand?

t the moment it has to be Shisiedo!  Ive been having trouble with my concealers creasing and I realized that my lack of sleep was causing the fine lines under my eyes to become more prominent so I sampled some Shisiedo Skincare and I’m hooked! I ended up purchasing almost the entire benefiance line!

What is one beauty tool/brush that you’d recommend to anyone?

The MAC 217 brush, or really any similar blending brush!  I can’t tell you how many girls have trouble blending out their eyeshadows, and let me tell you, the 217 will solve all your blending blunders!

What is one beauty product that you’d recommend to ANYONE & why?

The Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer is hands down the best primer I have ever tried! It makes my skin soft and supple and smooth so that my foundation goes on evenly, and it also helped prolong the wear of my makeup!  I also have extremely oily skin and it helped keep me matte, but it also works wonders for all skin types too!

If you had to give up one makeup item for the rest of your life, which would it be?

If I am speaking about one item in particular, it would have to be my urban decay primer potion.  I have extremely oily eyelids and that stuff just isn’t potent enough!  My eyeshadows always creased whenever I used it and the oils would always pool on my lids! The only eyeshadow primers I swear by are my MAC soft ochre paint pot and the NARS smudge proof eyeshadow base.

What is your absolute pet peeve when it comes to other people’s makeup?

I think that my biggest “pet peeve” is when people have the wrong shade of foundation.  I know part of that issue is because they are incorrectly matched, but you have the right to ask for samples of a shade before purchasing the foundation – that way you can ensure you have your perfect match.  Also, make sure you switch out your foundations seasonally, get a lighter one in the winter, and a slightly darker one for the summer time.  Our skin tones change with the seasons, so if you’re using one foundation all year round, that will result in a bad foundation match!  And last but not least, don’t get caught up in the shades.  I can’t tell you how many girls ask for a lighter foundation because they don’t want to admit that their skin tone is just a bit darker than they’d like.

Share a beauty tip/trick/hack.. whatever you’d like to call it. Lol

I think matte lipsticks are trending more than ever now, and sometimes its hard to find a specific color in a matte formula.  So to turn any lipstick completely MATTE, take some translucent powder (my favorite is the Ben Nye) and press it over top of the lipstick and it’ll instantly mattify it!

What’s the best way for future clients to reach you?

The best way would be through email:
