How To: Clean Your Makeup Brushes

e.l.f Studio Line Brush Set, $30

Hey Guys 🙂 So today I’m gonna talk about cleaning your makeup brushes. This is really important to know because you don’t want to get bacteria all over your face because you don’t clean your brushes. Sure there are brush cleaning solutions out there but sometimes you don’t have the money to buy them & they aren’t cheap either. So I’m going to tell you about a pretty well known method to cleaning you makeup brushes & keeping the bristles smooth & plush.

First off, let’s talk about how often you should clean your makeup brushes. You should clean them on a weekly basis. Failing to clean your makeup brushes and sponges can lead to acne because the residue and bacteria left from the old makeup can irritate your skin. It’s the same idea when using old makeup, that’s a no-no. You always want to make sure your brushes are fully dry too before you use them.

I have the e.l.f Studio Line Brush set and I loveeee it. Some people say that the e.l.f brushed are poor quality but not in my opinion. They’ve never failed me. I also have Sigma & Sonia Kashuk brushes which a little more expensive but work amazingly as well. Anyway, let’s move on to how to clean your brushes at home.

1. Get some dish soap (preferably Dawn) and quirt some into a bowl.

2. Get some Extra Virgin Olive Oil & pour some into a separate bowl.

3. Dip your brush into the soap then into the olive oil.

4. Swirl the brush into your hand & you’ll see all the makeup come out!

5. Run the brush under lukewarm water. Make sure you rinse it thoroughly!

6. Shape the brush so when it’s dry it remains it’s natural shape.

7. Place it on a towel & let it dry!

Pretty simple no? This isn’t a new technique. Plenty of makeup artists do this at home method of cleaning their makeup brushes. I just wanted to educate the newbies out there who didn’t know about this method.  This also works with makeup sponges like the beauty blender. Just makeup sure you get all the excess water out after cleaning the sponge. People ask me why use olive oil? Olive oil is a great moisturizer! It keeps your brushes plush and soft so they don’t feel rough when you use them. Also, it’s amazing at removing makeup when combined with soap. It definitely helps take makeup stains out of my beauty blender.

So I hope you guys got something out of this post & learned something new ❤
